Maike Nicolai joined GERICS in November 2019. She supports the knowledge transfer in the Hamburg Cluster of Excellence „Climate, Climatic Change, and Society“ (CLICCS). She is a journalist and cultural scientist with a focus on language and communication as well as media and public relations. Her main interest is in climate science and climate change communication tailored for different target audiences.
As Communications Officer at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II, Maike Nicolai contributed to the media and public relations activities for the IPCC Special Reports “Global Warming of 1.5°C”, “Climate Change and Land” as well as in particular “The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate”. She was also involved in the production of the Summaries for Policymakers and the Frequently Asked Questions of the IPCC Reports.
Previously, she worked at the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN) at Hamburg University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where she was responsible for communications around the German research network on ocean acidification BIOACID (Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification).
