Since September 2021, Laura Schaffer has been working as a PhD student within the KliWiSt project at the Climate Service Center Germany. The KliWiSt project is a BMWi funded joint research project with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES). The aim is to assess the impact of climate change on wind energy site assessment and to develop guidelines informing future engineering standard specifications. In this context, Laura investigates wind climate variability and change under changing climate conditions across different scales using climate model simulations.

After a bachelor’s degree in water management at the TU Dresden, Laura completed a master’s degree in Ocean and Climate Physics at the University of Hamburg. During her master studies she completed a course in polar oceanography at the University Centre in Svalbard. For her master thesis she worked on extreme weather forecasts in the Arctic as part of a European research project. Subsequently, Laura worked as a research assistant in the climate modeling group at the University of Hamburg, studying the predictability of marine cold air outbreaks (MCAO).
