Assistance to the Junior Research Group Lead (m/f/d)

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organisational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, invites applications for a citizen science platform support in the BMBF Junior Research Group on “Co-creating Climate Services for Care Economy and Caring Society” (CoCareSociety), in the frame of the BMBF FONA Junior Research Groups on Global Change: Climate, Environment and Health.

GERICS develops science-based prototype products and services in support to government, administration and business in their efforts to adapt to climate change. It builds up a national and international network structure in order to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.

The goal of the CoCareSociety project is to understand the interrelations between climate change, long-term care and health and well-being of the elderly, and their energy efficiency in the living environment and how changes can be induced in the interconnected systems to maximise health-climate-energy nexus outcomes for co-creating a friendly, climate-resilient, affordable, environmental society for the elderly.

This administrative and platform support position will support the BMBF Junior Research Group Leader on administrative process of the CoCareSociety project and co-developing and maintaining the citizen science platform.

This research position will expand the energy management field by incorporating future climate information to focus on the health benefits as the core outcomes to calculate energy saving potential and contribution to climate mitigation and adaptation goals as economic benefits. This candidate will apply business management and innovation research in interdisciplinary interface of energy, health, and climate to examine how to increase uptake and transformation in society. The candidate will apply the three information of energy, health, and climate services and apply in real-life cases to showcase the energy saving potentials and health co-benefits of mitigation and adaptation measures. And how the best practices and success stories could be transferred across sectors and regions.
Activities of the Earth League include, among others, scientific publications that highlight issues related to the global challenge of climate change and with a solution-oriented view. The Earth League also aims to launch a new round of its early-career programme which supports outstanding young scientists, giving them the opportunity to pursue research endeavours at the forefront of science.

As co-host of the Earth League secretariat, GERICS is looking for a Scientific Officer who is eager to support the Earth League members in their scientific and administrative activities. The Scientific Officer will work closely together with colleagues based at Arizona State University in the USA, among others.

Postdoctoral researcher position

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, invites applications for a Postdoc, starting August 1st, 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter), in the research project „Uncertain Water Resources under Global Change (UWaRes)” as part of a Helmholtz Young Investigator group (HYIG).

It builds up a national and international network structure in order to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.

The successful candidate will be part of a young research team at GERICS in collaboration with the University of Potsdam. The group aims to understand better and simulate interactions between human water use and regional climates. The sufficient availability of freshwater is vital to humans, economies, and ecosystems. However, high water demand from industries, households, and agriculture often leads to water scarcity and prevents a fair share of the available resources at the expense of the environment. Global change will further exacerbate water scarcity worldwide. The group's research will address these issues by bringing together and merging water resources and regional climate modeling guided by the practical challenges experienced by end-users and water managers in various case studies. The successful candidate will support the group's research by investigating coupled water use-climate impacts within a regional climate modeling system. The candidate will be, in particular, responsible for developing and applying new and tailored climate-water scenarios that also represent the specific needs of potential end-users. The project's overarching goal is to provide avenues toward fully-coupled climate and water impact research.
