IPCC report on climate change and land systems published

GERICS Statement on the IPCC "Special Report on Climate Change and Land"

The IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL) was adopted at the 50th session of the IPCC on 8 August 2019. The key messages confirm the overuse of land as a resource by humans.

Important results of the report are - from the point of view of the climate service - about twice as much warming of the ground-level air layer over the land areas compared to the global mean (over land and oceans) as well as the intensification and accumulation of extreme events.

In addition, the report outlined controlling land use competition as a major challenge for the future, such as food security and crop-based energy use. The sustainable use of food also plays an important role, especially in the industrialized countries.

Daniela Jacob: "Climate-friendly land use is extremely important, but cannot alone contribute to limiting the temperature increase to +1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels - it can always only be one part of the solution".
