Report of Working Group I "The Physical Science Basis" and new GERICS products on AR6
The report of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is currently the largest and most comprehensive evaluation of scientific findings on climate change. As the first part of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, it is published three months before the start of the World Climate Summit in Glasgow. The contributions of Working Groups II and III will follow in February and March, the synthesis report in September 2022.
234 lead authors from 66 countries evaluated more than 1400 studies for the report on the scientific basis of climate change and addressed more than 78,000 comments in the course of the technical and governmental reviews.
Their key messages:
- Climate change is already having an impact in all regions of the world
- Heat waves, heavy precipitation, droughts and many other climate events can undoubtedly be traced back to human activities
- Climatic changes are stronger than at any time in the past thousand years, and they will continue to increase
- Only with immediate and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can global warming be limited to 1.5°C.
Statement by GERICS Director Daniela Jacob on the report
The new report of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the latest and best evidence of how man-made greenhouse gas emissions are affecting the climate system, what dangerous consequences climate change is already having in different regions of the world, and what future we are heading towards: Heat waves that will be exacerbated especially in cities, extreme changes between heavy precipitation and drought, sea level rise, storm surges or other changes in the ocean that affect important ecosystems. Region-specific impacts such as heat waves, heavy precipitation and droughts are now even better understood. The vast majority of impacts can undoubtedly be traced back to human influences. However, the report is not only another clear warning signal, but also an important decision-making aid for politics and society. It also makes it clear that it is up to us and we have it in our own hands to bring emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to net zero in order to prevent worse consequences for the climate and our lives on this planet.
