On 11 July 2024, five WASCAL PhD students from HAW Hamburg visited GERICS to obtain a deeper insight into regional climate modelling and to learn more about the LANDSURF project.
The PhD students, from Gambia, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Niger, are mainly focusing their doctoral theses on the impact of climate change on health risks, such as the spread of malaria, in West Africa. During their stay at GERICS, Dr Torsten Weber gave a short presentation on GERICS, followed by an introduction to regional climate modelling by Dr Alain Tamoffo.
Dr Weber then explained the objectives of the BMBF-funded WASCAL WRAP 2.0: LANDSURF project and showed the attendees key results of the project, such as the web-based Decision Support System. It provides specific climate change information for the agricultural sector and can also be used for water and risk management in West Africa.
WASCAL is the abbreviation for "West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use". The West African countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sénégal and Togo are involved in the institution.
